Phil is an accomplished, award winning photographer, well known for his beautiful lighting techniques, creativity and attention to detail. He’s worked for clients including Marks & Spencer, Sainsbury’s & John Lewis and many more, shooting a huge variety of subjects, from still life, food, lifestyle to architecture, interiors, fashion and portraiture. The way Phil sees it is “photography is painting with light, so I embrace all forms of photography, as I absolutely love light, in all its guises. There’s always something to learn about light, no matter what light source you’re using.”
After a lot of soul searching, Phil decided to leave the advertising photography world behind and rediscover his own way of seeing again. He felt it was time to share how he sees and understands the world around us, from the beautifully simple things in life, like the journey of light cascading through leaves on its way to kiss the ground; to deeper subjects that are very close to Phil’s heart too, our emotional selves, our mental wellbeing and our environment.
During this intense time of change for Phil, he found himself at the edge of a hundred foot drop; he’d taken himself there to see if he could find a reason to stay alive, to feel a way back to a place where he could dream again. It was at this point Phil realised just how fragile and breakable we are.
In Phil’s new body of work ‘Breakable Creations’ he takes images of bowls, plates, mugs and glassware that were stored in his archive of previous photography jobs and injects new life into them, giving the long forgotten products a fresh beginning. He uses his love and understanding of light and the natural world, to bring to you visions that he feels fit somewhere between photography and painting.
Phil’s turned a wineglass into a Hummingbird; he’s made flowers from a champagne flute, Bluebells from a wine glass and side plate and many more surreal visions. His use of the circular shaped print, adds to your experience, it gives you a feeling of looking through a keyhole into another world, Phil’s world.
To help Phil on his quest to share his love of light, he’s used contemporary printing techniques, using brushed aluminium that sparkles and reacts to light in a variety of ways. He’s used shimmery white aluminium too, when light hits the white areas of the work they sparkle, bringing his work to life.
Phil has used this material to present his visions, as it needs no frame or glass. He feels that both of these elements hinder his viewing experience. Aluminium can also be hung in a wide spectrum of places; they can be hung outside or even in a bathroom.
Phil’s ‘Breakable Creations’ can be supplied in either circular or square shaped artworks, you can decide which shape you like best. You can also choose which material to have your artwork created on, Brushed Aluminium, White Aluminium or as a more traditional, Fine Art giclee.
